Just read the latest blog post of Paul Melcher. Apparently, Getty Images has decided to go after market shares in full force. In typical Melcher style a horror story of top quality can be read. If true then this is very bad new – at the end for everybody, clients, stock agencies, photographers and Getty themselves.
This blog post reminded me how fond I am of reading some bloggers. I guess I am above average interested in trends in the (photography) industry, especially the stock photo business. During the year I had a lot of blogs in my Google reader. But after some while I loose interest in most of them. Only a few that keep me returning because I really enjoy reading. Most of these blogs are informative, have real news, but most of all they are strongly opinionated. Opinions – advices, experiences – of top shooters, top editors or other authoritative writers. Here is my top 5
- The Stock Photo Guy – John Lund Stock Photographer
- Thoughts of a Bohemian
- Models.com Daily Feed
- Chase Jarvis Blog
- A Photo Editor
Early in the year Chase Jarvis and A Photo Editor were my top reads. But nowadays Chase is a little too much talking (and promoting) about his iPhone adventures (and business). I liked the pure photography stories most (like his Sandisk adventures). A Photo Editor sometimes publishes just too much posts to keep track with.
John Lund and Paul Melcher – Thoughts of a Bohemian – specialize in blogging about stock photography and while Paul is talking about all the doom scenarios John is always searching for new opportunities in the stock photo business. But both are authorities in this business. Probably Paul is more the realist and John the dreamer, but sometimes the Melcher posts are too bitter to read.
And Models.com…uhhh, well I need the models for my beauty and lifestyle photography, don’t I ??

Hi,
first, thank you for putting me in your favorite blogs. I am deeply honored. However, i feel bad that you think that some of my entries are “too bitter to read”. it is really my intent. The underlaying porpoise of my entries are to make people think, or rethink their position. I am extremely optimistic about the future of our trade and think we are living exciting times. However, I am sometimes discourage by the industry lack of energy regarding new technologies and opportunities. I just want to give a energy jolt to those who continue to think this is business as usual.
I hope I am not discouraging you from continuing taking images and making a career in this industry. it the the most rewarding career anyone could ever dream of. It is not easy, it is not going to make you a millionaire, but it sure will give you many, many happy days.
Next time you feel I am bitter, send me a not and I will rewrite my entries.
Best
Paul M
